Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - The Cleveland Indians have promoted pitcher Jeremy Sowers from Triple-A Buffalo, and the lefty will make his second start of the season Friday night in an interleague matchup with the Reds.
To clear a roster spot for Sowers, the Indians designated outfielder Jason Tyner for assignment, likely ending his brief stint with the club. Tyner has only appeared in one game for Cleveland since being recalled on May 11, and is out of minor league options.
Sowers, who lost a spring training competition for the fifth spot in Cleveland's rotation to Cliff Lee, was also called up for a spot-start on April 26 against the Yankees. The lefty, who turns 25 on Saturday, took a no- decision in a 4-3 Indians win, giving up seven hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Tyner spent the past three seasons in the Minnesota Twins organization, making appearances in the major leagues in each. Last season he played 114 games with the Twins, and hit .286 with 14 doubles, one home run, and 22 runs batted in.
A former first-round draft pick in 1998 by the New York Mets, Tyner has played in parts of eight big league seasons with the Mets, Tampa Bay, and Minnesota, compiling a lifetime .275 average with one homer and 94 runs batted in.
